Freight on the Rise: IBTTA Board Member Calls for Teamwork to Support Trucking and Infrastructure
In a recent opinion piece, Craig Shuey—Chief Operating Officer of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and IBTTA Board Member—shares how the explosive growth of e-commerce (expected to top $4.32 trillion in 2025) has reshaped the transportation landscape, putting new demands on trucking, logistics, and the roadways that support them. The PA Turnpike has kept pace by modernizing its tolling systems, launching Open Road Tolling, and investing in real-time tools to help truck drivers stay safe and efficient.
Shuey notes that commercial traffic on the Turnpike is up 15% from pre-pandemic levels, reflecting the system’s key role in connecting the Midwest to the East Coast. But with growing freight volumes comes a bigger challenge—like the nationwide shortage of truck parking. He makes it clear: no one agency can solve this alone. It will take creative partnerships across the public and private sectors, smarter infrastructure planning, and technology-driven solutions.
From teaming up with Drivewyze and INRIX to provide real-time alerts, to working closely with the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association to improve the travel experience for truck drivers, the Turnpike is committed to supporting the freight industry not just as a roadway operator, but as a partner. Shuey also emphasizes the importance of public awareness and recognition for professional drivers, who play a vital role in safely and reliably moving America’s freight.
As a longtime transportation leader, Shuey invites all stakeholders to come together in support of the drivers and infrastructure that keep goods moving—and the economy strong.
