Vision Zero has become a global ambition—embraced by cities, countries, and transportation leaders around the world. But turning that vision into reality remains one of the industry’s most complex challenges.

In a new op-ed in Roads & Bridges Magazine, IBTTA leaders Ferzan Ahmed and Bill Halkias explore what it will take to move from aspiration to action—drawing on insights that resonate across regions, systems, and approaches to road safety.

While progress is being made, one theme is universal: safer roads depend on shared responsibility. From infrastructure and policy to human behavior, achieving Vision Zero requires alignment across the entire transportation ecosystem—at both the local and global level.

The timing is especially relevant. As we recognize April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in the U.S., attention turns to one of the most persistent risks on our roads—distraction.

Through its Be Safe Together campaign, IBTTA continues to unite members and partners worldwide around a shared commitment to safety—with more to come as we roll out the 2026 campaign.

So what will it take to move from vision to reality?
