As part of IBTTA's 2026 Global Road Safety Week and Be Safe Together campaign, we are proud to support our long-standing international partner, ASECAP, as it launches the fourth edition of its European-wide #(S)heWorks#ICare road safety campaign on June 24.

ASECAP, the European Association of Operators of Toll Road Infrastructures, represents toll road operators, managers and infrastructure organizations across Europe. For many years, ASECAP and IBTTA have worked together to advance transportation innovation, operational excellence and roadway safety through knowledge sharing, joint programming and international collaboration.

This year's #(S)heWorks#ICare campaign highlights an issue that transcends borders: protecting the people who work on and around our roadways every day.

Roadway workers, maintenance crews, incident responders and patrol personnel face significant risks while performing essential work to keep transportation networks safe and reliable. Whether repairing infrastructure, responding to incidents, maintaining assets or assisting stranded motorists, these professionals often work just feet from high-speed traffic.

Work zone safety remains a significant challenge across the transportation industry. In 2024, more than 42,000 people were injured in work zone crashes in the United States alone. While conditions vary by country and region, transportation safety experts consistently identify driver distraction, inattention and other unsafe driving behaviors as major contributors to preventable incidents, placing roadway workers, emergency responders and travelers at risk.

That reality aligns closely with the focus of IBTTA's 2026 Be Safe Together campaign, Put Your Mind in Drive. This year's initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about distracted driving and reinforcing a simple but important message: your attention is your most important safety feature.

The #(S)heWorks#ICare campaign approaches safety through awareness, education and human connection. By creating opportunities for professional drivers and motorway patrol officers to engage directly with one another, the initiative helps foster a greater understanding of the challenges faced by those working along the roadway. These conversations serve as a reminder that behind every work zone, maintenance operation and roadside response are real people with families waiting for them at home.

This year's campaign also places an increased emphasis on driver well-being. Events across Europe will include workshops focused on mobility, movement and the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, recognizing that driver health and wellness are important components of overall roadway safety.

The campaign's reach continues to expand. In 2025, 19 events were organized by 18 motorway operators across eight countries, reflecting a growing commitment among transportation organizations to promote safer behaviors and stronger safety cultures across Europe.

At IBTTA, we believe roadway safety is a shared responsibility and a global priority. We are proud to stand alongside ASECAP in support of #(S)heWorks#ICare and the professionals who dedicate themselves to keeping our transportation systems operating safely every day.

As Global Road Safety Week continues, we encourage our members, partners and stakeholders around the world to support roadway worker safety, reduce distractions behind the wheel and help ensure that every worker returns home safely at the end of the day.
