From its popular Leadership Academy to its annual community service projects, a video (see below) released during IBTTA’s 85th Annual Conference and Exhibition last month highlights the IBTTA Foundation’s many powerful contributions to the global industry.

The IBTTA Foundation is the research, educational and charitable arm of IBTTA. The Foundation supports and conducts research on transportation and tolling; conducts training and professional development programs including the IBTTA Leadership Academy; supports charitable good works and operates a scholarship program.

One of the Foundation’s signature initiatives, IBTTA’s annual Leadership Academy, has graduated more than 250 participants since it began in 2007. “The Leadership Academy is about a week-long immersion in the tolling industry,” said IBTTA Past President Kary Witt, Vice President and National Toll Market Practice Leader at HNTB Corporation.

“These are actual practitioners who work in the agencies, who work with the consulting firms,” providing an “opportunity to be in the room with other people who are at your same career stage.”

The Foundation funds the new scholarship program that launched this year, with $5,000 each going to civil engineering students Miranda Simon of North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND and Andrew Bunn of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.

The Foundation also makes possible the local community service projects that IBTTA organizes during its annual Maintenance and Roadway Operations Workshop. Much of that work focuses on military veterans who’ve been disabled or face other kinds of challenging circumstances.

“Volunteering is in the nature of many of us in IBTTA,” said IBTTA Past President Rob Horr, Executive Director of the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority. “We are public servants.”

“When you participate in a service project, it really goes to your heart,” agreed IBTTA Past President Frank McCartney, Senior Vice President and National Toll Market Leader at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff.

IBTTA Foundation Chair John McCuskey, Principal Consultant at WSP USA, said “The Foundation plans to fund more research and community service initiatives, expand the scholarship program, and continue to move forward with other pillars of the foundation.”
