New infrastructure projected to drive a 1,900% increase in free produce  for the community by 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 18, 2025) — The IBTTA Foundation, the charitable arm of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association, brought more than 75 member volunteers to Detroit’s North End for its annual service project, partnering with the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI) to deliver major infrastructure upgrades that will expand the organization’s capacity and significantly boost its impact.

Held in conjunction with IBTTA’s Maintenance, Engineering and Road Operations Workshop, the project reflects the Foundation’s commitment to community engagement. While IBTTA members support local causes throughout the year, the Foundation’s annual service project is designed to create lasting, transformational change in the cities that host its events.

“IBTTA’s volunteers bring incredible skill, drive and determination to every service project,” said James Hofmann, IBTTA president and executive director and CEO of the North Texas Tollway Authority. “They represent the best of our industry—problem-solvers who tackle every challenge with purpose and energy. When a project begins, no one leaves until it’s done. They’re extraordinary, and no one does it better.”

MUFI, a nonprofit that converts vacant land into productive farmland and educational spaces, used the opportunity to implement critical upgrades that are already reshaping day-to-day operations and improving access to fresh food in the community.

“Our original campus was built when we were much smaller — and it served us well for a time,” said Tyson Gersh, co-founder and president of MUFI. “But over the years, we outgrew it. With IBTTA, we were finally able to scale up to meet our current and future needs. We now have purpose-built infrastructure that’s organized, durable and designed for long-term success.”

One of the most impactful changes was a complete rebuild of MUFI’s production farm. Volunteers removed outdated systems and reconstructed the farm from the ground up using 20-year landscaping fabric and a fully automated irrigation system, creating a low-maintenance, high-capacity foundation for future harvests.

In just one day, IBTTA Foundation volunteers completed a wide range of improvements, including:

  • Removal of 80 cubic yards of trash and debris
  • Installation of 7,500 square feet of weed barrier mulch
  • Construction of a steel structure to house MUFI’s first permanent farmers market, community tool library and farm equipment storage
  • Repair and staff training on MUFI’s primary tractor
  • Demolition of a long-blighted structure
  • Restoration of a children’s sensory garden and farmland grading for future planting
  • Installation of an HVAC system to correct a long-standing product defect
  • Sorting thousands of seed packets for a new community seed library

“Because of IBTTA, doing work on the farm is now easier, faster and more efficient,” Gersh said. “We’re no longer displaying vegetables on folding tables at the side of the road. Our tools are secure and accessible. Our growing operation is streamlined and ready to meet the needs of our neighborhood. We were able to reimagine what’s possible — and then actually build it.”

The results are expected to be transformational. In 2024, MUFI distributed about 1,000 pounds of fresh, free produce to residents of the surrounding community. In 2026, the organization projects more than 20,000 pounds — a 1,900% increase, and 21% higher than its previous 15-year record.

“This project is a great example of how the IBTTA Foundation gives back to the communities our members serve and the places we visit,” said Jim Wilson, president of the IBTTA Foundation and senior vice president at TransCore. “By applying the expertise and spirit of the tolling industry, our volunteers made a lasting impact—revitalizing the farm and helping improve food access for the community.”

MUFI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies entirely on volunteer support and donations to power its work in sustainable agriculture, education and community empowerment. To support MUFI’s mission and help provide free produce to Detroit residents, visit www.miufi.org/donate.

The IBTTA Foundation’s next service initiative will take place during the 93rd Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Denver, Oct. 11–14, 2025. Attendees will support a Soles4Souls shoe drive, collecting gently worn shoes for individuals facing hardship locally and globally. Members are encouraged to bring a pair to donate or contribute financially to help someone take their next step toward a better future.

The IBTTA Foundation thanks its Platinum Sponsors and event sponsors, whose generous support makes projects like this possible.
